Never Stop Sowing

In today’s culture, there have never been more options for spending your time. We can’t really complain about how many different things there are to do, whether it’s technology, access to any book or piece of work online, or traveling the world. But in the same way, it’s just as easy to waste time. Just because there are lots of options doesn’t mean the amount of distractions has decreased. And because distraction is so evident, it is paramount for us to stay on the path we were meant to follow. In the book of Ecclesiastes, this verse speaks directly to the issue at hand:

Sow your seed in the morning and do not be idle in the evening, for you do not know whether morning or evening sowing will succeed, or whether both of them alike will be good.”

We are commanded to sow our seed in both morning and evening – there’s no stopping, slowing down, or giving up. Think of sowing your seed as good works and of following our purpose in life on this earth. It’s a call to intentionality and focus. We should never give up on the path God has provided us, continuing to drive toward it, no matter what time it is in the day. Whatever values, mission, or vision God has given us to follow through, we shouldn’t let it wither away. It should be front and center in our lives at all times. When we do, we sow a seed that will reap righteousness as a reward, now and into eternity. As the author of Hebrews says about disciplining ourselves for righteousness:

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
